Daria Grace & The Pre-War Ponies

The Ponies officially released their new record on January 20th, 2016, titled Get Out Under The Moon. The Pre-War Ponies was formed in 2007 by Daria Grace, who wanted to put to use her growing collection of sheet music and repertoire of not-quite hits from the 20s, 30s and 40s. She quickly recruited her old friend, trombonist and soprano uke player J. Walter Hawkes to be a part of the madness, and they have become the core duo of the band.

The band doesn’t like to re-hash standards that have already been done so beautifully so many times. They like to dig a little deeper. You have likely heard of Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Johnny Mercer, but you probably haven’t heard some of their under-rated chestnuts like “Pardon My Southern Accent” or “Find Me A Primitive Man.” They don’t just stick to the famous songwriters, either. There are plenty of gems from that golden era by the likes of Fred Ahlert, Joe Young, Chas Tobias, and Eddie Jones, none of whom are exactly household names. But maybe they should be…

Daria has been playing music in NYC for quite a while now. She started out as a bass player and has toured and recorded with avant-rockers God Is My Co-Pilot and pop noir sextet MELOMANE, among many others. She was also a founding member of Hawaiian swing quartet The Moonlighters, and cut her teeth on the baritone ukulele in that band. More recently Daria has been playing and singing with The JACK GRACE BAND and SASHA DOBSON in addition to leading the Pre-War Ponies.

Deb Brisson and the HayBurners

Middlebury, VT

Deb’s singing is reminiscent of others, yet her style is all her own. These songs are real and heartfelt. The new CD, “Heart Shaped Stone” is at times rootsy, soulful, and bluesy,  but also rockin’  alt country with a twanging telecaster, rhythmic acoustic guitar and bass, and driving drums.

Many of the songs have been kicking around in different forms and arrangements while in other bands, but have come to fruition with the spark of Deb Brisson and her Burners. The songs were arranged, rehearsed and some even birthed in the loft above Deb’s horse barn. At times the music got so hot up there, you could almost see the hay start to burn.

“Neo-hillbillies with a twist, Frog Holler plays mountain blues and country as accessible and modern as the most hummable pop” – (The Washington Post)

“Fifteen years after forming, the Berks County outfit have managed to stay together and procure scads of acclaim-from NPR, No Depression, The Washington Post and countless others-thanks largely to the down-home sweetness of their loose, melodic strain of alt-country. But it’s also because the guys are genuine, playing what they like instead of burying their instincts in pretense or posturing”. (Doug Wallen Philly Weekly)

“Darren Schlappich is a real-deal storyteller, mixing everyday language and creative phrasing to produce vivid, exciting images that make you smile, tug on your heart, offer hard-earned wisdom – or do all three. Sweet melodies, rock crunch, and varied instrumentation make songs you can’t get out of your head. All this band has to offer is talent, great songs, and consistency”. (No Depression)

Robbie Fulks

Robbie Fulks was born in York, Pennsylvania, and grew up in a half-dozen small towns in southeast Pennsylvania, the North Carolina Piedmont, and the Blue Ridge area of Virginia. He learned guitar from his dad, banjo from Earl Scruggs and John Hartford records, and fiddle (long since laid down in disgrace) on his own. He attended Columbia College in New York City in 1980 and dropped out in 1982 to focus on the Greenwich Village songwriter scene and other ill-advised pursuits.

In the mid-1980s he moved to Chicago and joined Greg Cahill’s Special Consensus Bluegrass Band, with whom he made one record (Hole in My Heart, Turquoise, 1989) and toured constantly. Since then he has gone on to create a multifarious career in music. He was a staff instructor in guitar and ensemble at Old Town School of Folk Music from 1984 to 1996. He worked on Nashville’s Music Row as a staff songwriter for Songwriters Ink (Joe Diffie, Tim McGraw, Ty Herndon) from 1993 to 1998. He has released 10 solo records on the Bloodshot, Geffen, Boondoggle (self), and Yep Roc labels, including the influential early alt-country records Country Love Songs (1996) and South Mouth (1997), and the widely acclaimed Georgia Hard (2005).

Radio: multiple appearances on WSM’s “Grand Ole Opry”; PRI’s “Whadd’ya Know”; NPR’s “Fresh Air,” “Mountain Stage,” and “World Cafe”; and the syndicated “Acoustic Cafe” and “Laura Ingraham Show.” TV: PBS’s Austin City Limits; NBC’s Today, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Last Call with Carson Daly, and 30 Rock. TV/film use of his music includes True Blood, My Name Is Earl, Mary Shelley’s Frankenhole, Very Bad Things, and Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, and he has voiced or sung campaigns for Budweiser, McDonald’s, Nickelodeon, and Applebee’s. From 2004 to 2008, he hosted an hourlong performance/interview program for XM satellite radio, “Robbie’s Secret Country.” His compositions have been covered by Sam Bush, Kelly Hogan, Sally Timms, Rosie Flores, John Cowan, and Old 97’s.

Robbie’s writing on music and life have appeared in GQ, Blender, Chicago Reader, DaCapo Press’s Best Music Writing anthologies for 2001 and 2004, Amplified: Fiction from Leading Alt-Country, Indie Rock, Blues and Folk Musicians, and A Guitar and A Pen: Stories by Country Music’s Greatest Songwriters. As an instrumentalist, he has accompanied the Irish fiddle master Liz Carroll, the distinguished jazz violinist Jenny Scheinman, and the New Orleans pianist Dr. John. As a producer his credits include Touch My Heart: A Tribute to Johnny Paycheck (Sugar Hill, 2004) and Big Thinkin’ by Dallas Wayne (Hightone, 2000). Theatrical credits include Woody Guthrie’s American Song and Harry Chapin’s Cottonpatch Gospel. He served twice as judge for the Winfield National Flatpicking Guitar competition. He tours yearlong with various configurations and plays a weekly residency at the Hideout in Chicago.

His 11th record, Gone Away Backward, returned him to his bluegrass days and extends the boundaries of that tradition with old-time rambles and sparely orchestrated, acoustic reflections on love, the country life, the slings of time, and the struggles of common people. His latest album Upland Stories (2016) continues this tradition with the additional of drums and several electric instruments. Both albums were recorded by Steve Albini.

The Silos buzz with rock energy reminiscent of the proto-punk Lower East Side legends The Velvet Underground, punched up with pop melodies that resuscitates a sound that never went out of style. The songs play out like minimalist short stories framed by the spacious, guitar-heavy arrangements that add depth and transcendence, but can switch to ferocious, hook-laden rock to part the clouds and land back on terra firma. Naked honesty and joyous melodies never sounded so good together. It will come as no surprise that early in their career, The Silos were named “Best New American Band” by Rolling Stone magazine and made their national television appearance on the David Letterman Show. After numerous critically acclaimed albums and thousands of days on the road, it is heartening to know that the band continues to make brilliance look easy.
